A ‘little thought’ for this Sunday ~ Fr Prem

When I take communion to the sick and often I read with them the gospel for the upcoming Sunday mass. It is in a way a nice preparation for me for my sermon on Sunday. It make me reflect think and pray with them.

So as I took communion to the sick this week and read the gospel, I often tell them, that it is their turn to preach to the priest, as I get them to read the Gospel too. One who reads the gospel preaches! Of course you can see the surprise and the smile on their faces. Once they get use to it they would say ‘not me again’.

One of them said ‘if only the world lived up to the gospel we just read what a better place this world would be’. I suppose this sums it up all. But sadly it is not.

Another said he was touched by the words ‘you did not choose me, no, I chose you’. Again it sums up our calling our vocation. It is not a case of we choosing God, or gods of our making but we are called, chosen by God. Not just to have a following of him – as is in our world of mass media, but set on a mission a task. There is something worthwhile for us to do and be on course.

Now, we shall not fulfil, this if we fail to see and speak the truth.

Love, charity must uphold truth, dignity and respect. If not that love is not of God, but our making. It fails to bring a joy that is complete.

A ‘little thought’ for this Sunday ~ Fr Prem

‘The glory of God is man (human person) fully alive’ a famous quote by St Irenaeus, a 2nd Century father of the church, whose writings were formative in the early development of Christian theology. I remember very well, the professor who taught me church history in the major seminary in Sri Lanka. The late Martin Query a French OMI priest who served for decades in the academic staff of the Seminary. I remember vividly him quoting this in his wonderful way and accent, but he then said something struck me profoundly. He said, this is only partly quoted and so is misquoted and misinterpreted to suit us often and is deceptive and mendacious. I wondered! And went on a rampage of a search! I shall leave you there too, like me to wander and search! (oh well I had the luxury of remembering the answer he gave!)

Jolly and a happy person, the ‘human fulfilment’ ‘self-fulfilment’ – I feel happy and content, satisfied to the brim, everything is – hoo la la! – a celebration, and must be! – is it not what God wants, is it not the glory of God. Oh, what a shame of a god, if it is not! Surely a false God.

What would the readings for our mass today tell us?

As I repeat, during easter season both the readings, 1st & the 2nd are from the New Testament. Its all about how the first Christian community defined itself and came to be. They never asked the questions as we do today, and ask at every meeting of the church today, ‘what can we do to increase our numbers?’ ‘Bring more people to church?’ ‘how to bring to the fold those lapsed?’. I do not think this was the case in our early Christan community.

For there was no need for such a question, the church simply grew, numbers increased. There were great witnesses, martyrs, great saints. There was fruit and much fruit, in plenty!! Good fruit, fruit that lasts! As God willed!!

What was the secret? What are these lasting fruits?
